Deforestation Monitoring with Landsat and VIIRS
Objective: Utilize high spatial resolution images from Landsat and VIIRS satellites to monitor deforested areas over time.
How it can benefit the population:
- Swift identification of deforested areas, enabling a more efficient response to illegal activities;
- Facilitation of planning and implementation of reforestation strategies in critical regions;
- Raising awareness among the population about the consequences of deforestation, promoting environmental consciousness.
The active fire hotspots from Landsat provide spatial scale information that is valuable for contextualizing sub-daily observations from other products such as MODIS, VIIRS, and Harmonized Landsat-Sentinel (HLS)," she said. "Furthermore, there is now a greater opportunity to merge fine spatial scale hotspots from Landsat with fine temporal scale hotspots from existing sources using a seamless pipeline when accessing data through FIRMS.
Temperature Analysis with MODIS
Objective: Explore surface temperature data of the Earth using the MODIS dataset.
How it can benefit the population:
- Monitoring temperature patterns to predict extreme weather events, such as heatwaves;
- Identifying areas prone to significant climate changes, enabling local adaptations;
- Supporting water resource management initiatives by considering the influence of temperature on water availability.
In the atmosphere, it helps us gain a comprehensive understanding of cloud properties and the percentage they cover on Earth. Finally, it assists us in monitoring active forest fires, changes in land use, and volcanic activity.
Soil Moisture Monitoring with SMAP
Objective: Analyze data from the SMAP dataset to understand variations in soil moisture.
How it can benefit the population:
- Identification of regions susceptible to drought, allowing the implementation of water resource management measures;
- Support for agriculture by providing soil information to optimize irrigation practices;
- Early warnings for communities dependent on agriculture, minimizing negative impacts of water scarcity.
